How To Avoid Distractions And Stay Safe At Work

work accident

Mundane jobs, noisy environments and even getting too involved in the office gossip, can lead to distractions that won’t just get you in trouble with the boss, but could also be dangerous to your health.

Everyone knows that becoming distracted while you are driving can be potentially lethal, but it is not just on the roads where distractions lead to accidents at work.

Keeping both your eyes and your mind focused on the job you are doing helps to keep you safe.  If you are unsure what constitutes as a dangerous distraction, here are some of the most common forms of distraction that lead to Worker’s Compensation claims here in Florida.

  1. Becoming complacent

If you work with machinery of any kind, it can be easy to lose concentration when undertaking repetitive jobs.  This can be very dangerous as you are no longer in control of the machinery that you operate.  If you are doing the same thing day in and day out, it can be easy to forget the hazards involved in your line of work.  Regular re-training and changes in routine can help to remind workers of potential hazards.  At the very least, you should be able to take regular breaks to help re-focus your mind.

  1. Working When Tired

If you have been working for more hours than you can cope with, or you are not getting enough sleep at home, you can easily lose focus. Working while tired is distracting because it becomes hard to devote attention to small details when the drowsiness kicks in.

Make sure you get plenty of rest before you arrive at work, or speak to your boss if you are having real problems with your sleep patterns at home.

  1. Too Much Noise

Constant noise can be both annoying and distracting.  If there is a constant noise that doesn’t fit your working environment, you are likely to focus on the sound rather than your work. In many cases, you may have grown used to the noise around you, but it could have a distracting effect on one of your co-workers.

  1. Not taking regular breaks

Most work environments offer the facilities for employees to take regular breaks. Under Florida Labor Laws, employees are usually allowed a 30-minute lunch break and 15 minute short breaks. This is applicable to employees who work for at least an 8-hour shift. Those who work under 6 hours are entitled to a paid break, but not a 30-minute unpaid break.  While the money you earn is important to you, being able to eat and drink and come back to your works station feeling refreshed is vital to your wellbeing at work.

  1. Dealing With Personal Stress And Inconvenience

We all face stressful periods at some point in our lives.  If you feel that you are too stressed out with financial worries, problems at home or even if you are simply feeling unwell, you should ask for some time off until you can focus.  If this is not practical, and you have to be at work, try to take things slowly and focus as much as possible on the job at hand.  Try deep breathing exercises to help you relax and take regular breaks.
